Great ambience at King Peter I Stadium
The derby match took place on the main field of King Peter I Stadium. The conditions were ideal, although it rained heavily over the weekend. The field was excellently prepared, so all the preconditions for a great match were met. We must also note that the heavier rain avoided falling during the match. Conditions we are not used to in previous years, and we hope to see them more and more on our rugby fields.
A derby that meet expectations
Rad and Zvezda matches are always full of uncertainty. Derby match of the Serbian Championship, which is always interesting. So it was this time as well. We saw the first excitement in 7. minute, when the Rad put pressure deep in Zvezda’s 22 meters. The Red and whites managed to defend themselves and got a scrum 5 meters from their tryline. However, the Građevinari overcame the scrum of Zvezda, where the number 8 Marko Ristic put the ball in the try for 5-0. The guests quickly got rid of the pressure and started playing fast and effective in the field. At a fast pace, they won the penalty some 30 meters from the goal in a solid position. In 27. minute of the match, Zvezda attacked around the center of the field. Good rhythm of the match in the second half
The second part of the match started at a high pace. It didn’t take long for the results to change. Zvezda’s indiscipline cost them a penalty of 10 meters. Rad played on the scrum from the penalty, where in the end Vladimir Đukić scored an try for 29-5 on a test from the pick and go game. Then in 48. a minute of lightning action of Zvezda was seen. The fast ball reached Momcilo Kralj, who employs Madjanovic with a pass inside, who finds Dobrivoje Lojanica in ofload, who cheats the defense of Rad with a side step and achieves an try under the posts. Strahinja Milosevic reduces to 29-12 with a clear kick from the conversion.

Rad's dominant scram
From the first to the last scrum, Rad absolutely dominated. The first line in the lineup of Đukić, Jončić and Vraneš was superior to Zvezda. The Građevinari won a few balls by overcoming the opponent’s scrum, and even scored their first try. After each scrum, Zvezda was in a position to break the ball and the line of attack was drawn back. That static element brought a great advantage to Rad and significant control of ball possession. As the game came to an end, Zvezda managed to reduce the pressure on their scrum.
Zvezda was very good in the open game
The flow of the ball in Zvezda’s attack was extremely good during the entire match. The tempo of the game was at a high level at certain moments. It is from such a game that scoring situations are created. When you play fast, you just have to communicate a lot more and play without the ball. The red and whites have shown in certain periods of the game that they are capable of a high level of play. We can only imagine what the scoreboard would have looked like if the scrum was safer and there was more discipline in the game.
Lack of discipline
The biggest problem of all teams in Serbia, which later appears in the national team. It is especially impressive that experienced players talk to the referee, receive penalties and even an contrapenalties. And they should influence young people by their example and behavior. We repeat this like parrots. The team that retreats to 10 meters after the penalty and waits for the opponent is disciplined and has a psychological advantage. Team captains are only allowed to talk to the referee when the referee calls them, not during the game. When that happens, that pattern of behavior is taken over by other players, so the team receives penalties, where the opponent is given more possession of the ball. Discipline is the key, discipline wins matches.
Young players play at a high level
We followed with great attention the young players who are slowly entering senior rugby from the younger categories. There were a lot of players on both sides, but a few of them really caught our eye. Some of the young players are already quite experienced and have a lot of games in their legs. Players born in 2000. and younger we consider tto be young and promising players and we have given our opinion on them.
Srdjan Božić (2000), who is already quite experienced in senior rugby, stood out in Rad. Relja Pećanac (2001) is already an established member of the Serbian national team, his games are far from surprises. Danijel Stojanović (2004) and Nemanja Stošić (2002) played very mature, solid and smart.
In Zvezda, Momcilo Kralj (2004) stood out the most, who played a great game. He conducted the attack very well, while he was standard in defense. Dragan Kokanović (2005) was up to the task, which was not easy at all, but he showed all his qualities. Igor Lucic (2003) played a particularly difficult role, playing outside his position, and he responded to the challenge very confidently. Dobrivoje Lojanica (2003) was in charge of the pace of Zvezda, who together with the King was the playmaking couple of Zvezda.
Great lineout for both teams
A static element in the game that both teams performed at a high level. The work was much more deadly in the mole they formed after the lineout. Experienced players in an educational role
We especially liked the way and the attitude of experienced players towards young people, and the way they educate them. When you know that quality comes from younger categories, then you absolutely want to transfer your experience and knowledge to them. That happened to both teams in this match. When young people make mistakes, experienced players encourage them They give them opportunities to play and show what they know, where they have a chance to test the limits of their talent in senior rugby. We especially liked that. We also liked the atmosphere in both teams, where the tension was lowered, as if everything was predestined for the development of the youth.
Uroš Jončić factor
For us a player of the match. The man scored three tries The player of the first line of the dominant scrum. Part of solid linout. Excellent in open play and positioning. In defense of a man of trust. From positioning in defense, aggression and shooting, he provided a high level of play everywhere. He came out the winner in most of the contacts in attack and defense.
